NLC Selects 12 Cities for Learning Community on Youth Employment Strategies

 

The YEF Institute has selected 12 cities to participate in a learning community that will focus on how to use American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to strengthen local youth employment efforts. The cities selected for the Reengaging Disconnected Youth Through Economic Recovery Efforts learning community include Des Moines, Iowa; Dubuque, Iowa; Hartford, Conn.; Manchester, Conn.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Newark, N.J.;  Portland, Ore.; Reno, Nev.; Rochester, N.Y.; Tucson, Ariz.; Washington, D.C.; and West Palm Beach, Fla.

EPAN Members Gather in San Francisco to Discuss High School, College, and Workforce Innovations

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom Welcomes EPAN Meeting Participants at City HallOn June 1-3, more than 35 members of the Mayors’ Education Policy Advisors' Network (EPAN) joined representatives from the Alternative High School Initiative (AHSI) and Early College High School Initiative (ECHSI), along with other top education leaders from across the nation, to discuss ideas for expanding innovative school improvement models. 

Speakers at the EPAN meeting included San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, Stanford Professor Linda-Darling Hammond, who chaired President Obama's education transition team; and Jim Shelton, assistant deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement.

YEF Institute and Alternative High School Initiative (AHSI) Project Featured in Education Week

IYEF_AHSI_EdWeek_Image6-09Education Week recently highlighted efforts in three cities - Indianapolis, Nashville, and Newark - to expand the menu of educational options for students who struggle in traditional high school settings, are considered at risk of dropping out, or who have already quit school. These cities are currently working with the YEF Institute to launch "place-based partnerships" with the AHSI network of youth development organizations to create new schools, overhaul existing schools, and ensure that every young person is prepared for college and career success.

Funding for Cities to Support Children, Youth, and Families in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

 

The YEF Institute has prepared an overview of funding opportunities available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 that will or could go to municipal governments. In addition, the Institute has developed more in-depth briefs describing opportunities to use the recovery package funding to advance priorities such as youth violence prevention, afterschool, early childhood success, tax credits and public benefits, multiple pathways to graduation, and neighborhood stabilization.
